Internet Guidelines

The Paris Public Library has public access computers connected to the Internet as a means of expanding our information services.

1. You must have a Paris Public Library card that is free of overdues, fines, etc. to use a computer workstation. Out of county visitors may use the Internet with the purchase of a Computer Workstation Use card, which is good for five sessions.  Non-resident visitors who wish to use the workstation to check their e-mail only may do so without purchasing a Visitor Computer Workstation Use card, but are limited to one 30 minute session.

2. All computer workstation users must read and sign a Computer Workstation Access Agreement prior to accessing the Internet for the first time.

3. Parents or legal guardians must assume responsibility for deciding what library resources are appropriate or their children. Children under eighteen years of age must have permission from a parent or legal guardian to use a computer workstation. The parent or legal guardian must read and sign a Computer Workstation Access Agreement for Minor before the child may use a computer workstation.  Children under 12 years of age must have parental supervision during their computer workstation session.

4. Your Paris Public Library card or Computer Workstation Use card must be presented when you sign in to use a computer workstation and it will be held at the Electronic Reference Service Desk while you use the computer.

5. You may use a computer workstation for one hour per day and use is on a first-come, first-served basis. If no one is waiting, the time may be extended. There is a three hour total per day time limit.  The computer workstations are available during Library open hours and until 15 minutes before closing. No more than 2 people may be at a computer workstation at a time.

6. To save files, you may purchase a formatted disk at the Electronic Reference Service Desk. Files may not be downloaded or saved to the Hard Drive; nor may you use any personal software programs.

7. You may make paper printouts at the charge of 15 cents per printed page.

8. Users are not allowed to enter chat, usenet areas, or play games.

9. Failure to use a computer workstation appropriately and responsibly, as defined in the Computer Workstation Access Agreement, will result in revocation of computer privileges and/or Library use privileges.  The first offense will result in three months loss of privilege, six months for a second offense, and permanently for a third offense.  Unacceptable use that is illegal may result in criminal prosecution as well.

10. Misuse of the Internet includes, but is not limited to, actions which:

destroy, alter, prevent, or interfere with the integrity of computer-based information including attempts to bypass security functions, obtain passwords, or alter the configuration of Library workstations in any way damage, tamper or destroy equipment, software or data belonging to the Library including adding, altering or deleting files on Library workstation hard drives or other library computer equipment violate copyright or software license agreements seek to gain unauthorized access to a Library Internet computer invade or violate another Library user's privacy seek to defraud or obtain money or other values by false representation or use a Library Internet computer for commercial purposes use a Library Internet computer for any illegal or criminal purpose.
